Writers Write Notes

Author's Tone: Tone is an attitude, not a personality. When an author is working on creative writing, their goal must be to get their point across as clearly as possible, in an impressionistic manner.

Questions to ask yourself to ensure you are in the correct tone:

1. What drove me to write this?
2. Who is going to read this?
3. What do I want to get across to the reader?

Remember: Practice makes perfect! Try new strategies and find what works best for you.

Character Traits: each character has individual traits that set them apart from each other. These traits are shown through conversation, genetic variables, or through their features.

Protagonist vs. Antagonist:

Protagonist: This is the leading character in the story
Antagonist: This character often opposes someone or something in the story (normally the protagonist)

Types of Characters:

- Irresponsible characters create change
- Sympathetic characters may be easily deceived or find out important information, which leads to conflict
- Passionate characters give their heart up easily, which could lead to urges
- Egocentric characters may face conflict with their inner beings and how they project themselves into the real world
- Antagonistic characters destroy relationships

How to Describe Sound:

Use your senses as you write: what you see, taste, smell, touch, and hear.

Use describing words to give your writing animation, for example:

- Audible
- Muffled
- Mellow
- Soft
- Sweet
- Percussive
- Riotous
- Roaring
Buzzed
- Sighed
- Groan
- Rumble

Character Flaws: Focus on the four main characters in the story and be sure to touch on each of the major or minor flaws that they possess.

For example,

- Abusive
- Arrogant
- Blunt
- Bold
- Cursed
- Disturbed
- Envious
- Idealist

I realized, reading through these articles, that I have picked up on numerous of the rules that come with creative writing, but tend to stick with the same general plotline throughout each story. I need to use the knowledge from the notes taken from each article to enhance my writing skills.
